Long term CALLPlus Salford volunteer Mike Dawson retired at the end of May 2014. Mike nicknamed ‘Curly Mike’ despite being completely bald, volunteered with CALLplus for over 6 years. Mike is seen here with CALLplus Salford staff Sue Stott and Margaret Carlton.
Following his retirement from paid work and the untimely death of his wife in 2005, Mike saw an advertisement for volunteers in the MEN and decided to approach CALLplus.
Mike says he joined to help people and to reassure them that their lives have value and that there are people ready to support them through their illness. Although he was retired he wanted to spend his time doing something of value. Mike has had a varied life, working in the Middle East and Africa. He is a keen walker and leads walking groups. He would volunteer for CALLplus four days a week, saving the fifth for his walking.
Mike’s dedication was highlighted recently when a client who is in extremely poor health was unable to go to a funeral. Mike made himself available and not only took the client but stayed with her returning her safely home afterwards.
We will very much miss not only his availability for transports but also his lively personality and charming cheekiness. Thanks Mike for your dedication!
