CALLplus President, Tom Brown, invited volunteers from our different branches to get together to learn more about each other and the engines that powered the Industrial Revolution on a guided visit to the Power Hall of the Manchester Museum of Science and Industry.

Guides Lee and Anna talked throuh the development of steam power as it progressed from Newcommen’s atmospheric engine via Watt’s steam engines, to Stevenson’s Jupiter and on to the application of this power in driving manufacturing machines, electrical generators and trains.

Tom said: “It was a very interesting afternoon and a similar event will be organised in the 2014.”

If you have any ideas for a volunteer ‘get-together’ please get in touch!
